Case File #6

The Val Johnson Incident

August 27, 1979

Name: The Val Johnson Incident

Scientific Name: N/A

Location: Marshall County, Minnesota

Description: Sheriff’s Deputy Val Johnson was on patrol near Stephen, Minnesota, in the early morning hours of August 27, 1979, when he spotted a strange light in the sky. Within seconds, the light was inside the squad car, leaving physical evidence on both the car and Johnson himself.

Witness Testimony: “It felt like I got hit in the face with a two-hundred-pound pillow. And that’s the last I recall.” Val Johnson, 2017

Conclusion: Unsolved

At around 2:00 a.m. on August 27, 1979, thirty-five-year-old Sheriff’s Deputy Val Johnson peered out the window of his 1977 Ford LTD cruiser to spot a strange light in the sky.

“I thought maybe a semi hit a deer,” Val tells me thirty-eight years later, as we huddle over our coffees at Perkins Restaurant, “or maybe an aircraft with one of those big lights had landed there.”

I nod, taking a long sip of coffee to keep from pinching myself. After all, it’s not every day you get to sit across the table from Val Johnson of “Val Johnson Incident” fame. A man whose run-in with an unidentified flying object was, according to anomalist Jerry Clark, “one of the top 10 most influential UFO encounters in history.”
